The name Umai Ceramic Studio comes from "Umay Nine," the Great Goddess in Turkish mythology. Umay Nine represents fertility, protection, and creative powers, symbolizing the fertility of the earth and the capacity to give life.
The deep connection this ancient goddess has with the earth and nature has greatly influenced my passion for ceramic art.
For me, working with ceramics is the purest form of giving life to the earth. Shaping the clay with my hands and breathing new life into it lies at the heart of my creative process. This process makes me feel the power within nature every single time. Just as Umay Nine protects and brings healing to all living things, I hope that each of my designs brings aesthetic and functional healing into your life.
Each ceramic piece reflects the special bond I’ve formed with nature. I hope these designs, imbued with the spirit of Umay Nine, will touch your living spaces and bring you the ancient, powerful energy of nature.
About the artist
My name is Esra
I’m Esra İşcen, and I’d like to share with you my ceramic journey and the birth of Umai Ceramic Studio.
As a ceramic designer with an academic background in archaeology, my connection with ceramics is deeply rooted in history. The excavations and discoveries I participated in across different regions of Anatolia drew me to the primitive forms and aesthetic of ceramics. Ever since I was a child, I have always had a passion for creating things with my hands, and this passion, combined with my archaeological studies, further strengthened my interest in the art of ceramics. The knowledge I gained during my academic education has given me a profound perspective on the history and art of ceramics.
Each of my designs is a tribute to the earliest creative expressions of humanity. My goal is to create pieces that are both aesthetic and functional, with personal touches that stand out from the ordinary. I hope that every piece from Umai Ceramic Studio will bring you the same creative energy and tranquility that I experience. I look forward to giving life to many more beautiful stories together with Umai pieces that leave a mark on your hands, homes, and souls.
